Obituary for John Nabors II

Our John, her Hunny, their Poppa, my Pops, my Dad. He was many things to many different people. A husband, a father, a brother, a grandfather, and everyone’s friend. Passionate about his career in healthcare, call aside, he loved working with his people. But, the moments he lived for were undoubtedly those at home. His earthly journey ended on Friday, April 1st 2022. He had 72 full years and a life well spent.

John Benjamin Nabors II was born March 14th, 1950 in Portsmouth Virginia. Son of a World War II Navy veteran, John Whitfield Glover Nabors. A baby boomer, true four-eyed Southern boy, and a perpetual student of all things interesting. He got away with a lot (skipping school, a few fights, electrocution, more than enough girlfriends)…but his mother, Marion Clemmons Nabors held the family together with charm, whit and a whip like no other. Dad loved his mother unconditionally. To him, she was perfect, much alike our mother. Dad served his country during Vietnam following his father’s footsteps as a seaman. Later on, one of his sons would go to college on the grounds of his old bootcamp in Florida. They had beers and talked about those days with pride in his service to country. He was smart, had a Master’s Degree, and felt called to aid others. Thankfully, this calling lead him to meet our mom, Linda Gail Carroll, in 1975’s Chattanooga, TN. My God he loved her. They are married 45 years this July. After moving to Memphis, and before finally settling in Mobile, they had two wonderful, good looking boys…John Benjamin Nabors III and Kenneth Whitfield Nabors.

Dad would read to us at night, take us camping, taught us how to drive before it was time, lecture on how to smoke a cigar, and encourage us to lead our own lives, follow our own paths. We believe he lived a bit through others. If you liked it, he liked it. He was open to trying new things. Maybe it was his way of traveling.

Dad was a believer in God, Bigfoot, UFOs and Ghosts. He held his guns dearly and was a responsible collector of many. Always safety conscious and he ardently prepared for any disaster. Dad loved his red truck, the color representative of his support for Alabama football. At the end of the day, Dad was a secret romantic, perhaps that is why Casablanca was his favorite movie.

He loved being a grandfather. A present from Ben’s beautiful wife and Dad’s scary movie partner, Rebeca. He developed his own special relationship with each of his three grandchildren. They had profound bonds. Coffee runs and taking his granddaughter Addison to the horse farm. Milkshakes and Taekwando he shared with his grandson Benjamin. Cason, to whom he imparted a wild, loving spirit. He adored his grandchildren. And they loved him.

Later in life he would excavate his family tree. Almost like the the archaeologist that he always wanted to be. He was proud to find out that there is a a bit of lucky charm in him. An Irish ancestry that validated a deep appreciation of Guinness. Mom and Dad, enjoyed the pleasantries of their retirement life. Full of grandchildren, travels, new house projects, and lighthearted conversations in the sunroom.

Dad will be honoured at the Church of the Redeemer on 7125 Hitt Road; 36695 Friday, 8th April at 1pm. We invite you to attend. A celebration of life over a Guinness and a shot will follow.

Love you Dad.
