Obituary for James Mayberry

JAMES ANTHONY MAYBERRY, a native of Maysville, KY and a resident of Mobile, AL, was born October 4, 1959, to the late Betty Louise Slater.

He was baptized and accepted Christ at an early age under the leadership of Rev. Ivory Dean at the Bethel Baptist Church in Maysville, KY.

James graduated in 1977 from Maysville High School as Salutatorian of his class. He also served in the United States Army and was an owner - operator with Landstar Trucking Co.

James passed on Thursday, February 20, 2020 surrounded by his family.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Louise Slater, brother, Jeffrey A. Mayberry, and stepfather, Charles Slater.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Yolanda Washam Mayberry; two sons, Joshua A. Grant of Ellenwood, GA and Kendrick L. Washam of Mobile, AL; seven grandchildren, Katie, Zsewaun, and Antavious Grant of Ellenwood, GA, Harmony, Kaveyon, Kinsey, and Kingston Washam of Mobile, AL; his father, Bobby Nelson of Maysville, KY; five sisters, Tanya (Wilbert) Dunlap, Allaina (Donald) Lang of San Antonio, TX, Johanna Nelson of Indianapolis, IN, Rudene (Jimmy) Jones, Virginia, and Jo Ellen Jones of Mt. Sterling, KY; one devoted aunt, Frances Greene of Maysville, KY; three sisters-in-law, (one devoted) Patricia (Vension) Smith, Deloris Forrest, and Jacqueline Etsekhume all of Theodore, AL; two brothers-in-law, Minister Frank (Benita) Washam of Mobile, AL and Rev. William Naves of Kansas City, MO; three devoted cousins, Frank (Susan) Greene of Lexington, KY, John Greene of Maysville, KY, and Janice (Rev. Dwayne) Tutt of Statesville, NC; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives, and friends.

A visitation will be held on Friday, February 28, 2020 from 9am until the 11am “Homegoing Celebration” at Pilgrim Rest AME Zion Church located at 4750 Joe Carl Road in Theodore, Alabama. Interment will follow in the Alabama State Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort, Alabama.
